Documents required to scrap a car in Northampton and the NN postcode
Scrapping a car anywhere in the UK requires the same core documents — a V5C logbook and proof of identity. Here is what you need to know for the Northampton area, including what happens if any of these are missing.
The V5C logbook
The V5C is your vehicle registration certificate. It links you as the registered keeper to the vehicle by registration number. The yellow V5C/3 slip at the bottom is what the collection driver takes on handover — it is the official legal record of the vehicle being transferred to an authorised buyer.
The V5C should be in your name. If you purchased the vehicle privately and the logbook is still in the seller's name, bring any evidence of purchase you have — a written receipt, bank transfer confirmation, or signed handover note. Let the buyer know at the booking stage.
Northamptonshire's market town and rural community character means informal vehicle transfers — particularly for older vans, agricultural vehicles, and project cars — are not uncommon. Vehicles changing hands with handshake agreements rather than formal paperwork are a known scenario for buyers in this area. If your paperwork situation is informal, explain it at the quote stage and the buyer can advise on what they need.
Proof of identity
The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 requires all licensed ATFs to verify the identity of the person selling the vehicle. A driving licence or passport is standard. This is a legal requirement for the buyer — skipping identity verification is not permitted, and any buyer who does so is operating outside their licence conditions.
If you do not have a driving licence or passport, a combination of government-issued correspondence (HMRC, council tax) and a bank statement may be accepted. Confirm with the buyer in advance.
Scrapping without a V5C
A missing logbook is manageable but requires additional steps. A reputable ATF will ask for supporting documentation: photo ID, proof of address, and whatever purchase documentation is available. If you have nothing beyond your own statement, the buyer will advise on their specific requirements.
You can order a replacement V5C from the DVLA for £25 via GOV.UK. Delivery takes around five working days. If collection timing allows, ordering a replacement first is the cleanest route. If not, let the buyer know at the booking stage.
For older vehicles in the NN postcode — particularly commercial vans or older estate cars that have been off the road for years — V5C documents sometimes pre-date the current computerised format. Older V5 documents are still accepted. Mention it at the booking stage.
Personalised number plates
If the vehicle carries a personalised registration you want to keep, begin the DVLA plate retention process before collection day. The GOV.UK online service handles this. A retention fee applies. The process must be completed and the plate assignment changed before the vehicle is handed over — once a CoD is issued, the plate is no longer separately recoverable.
Silverstone — located in the NN12 area near Towcester — gives the NN postcode a motorsport connection, and personalised or performance-associated plates are not uncommon on vehicles in the south of the county. If this applies to your vehicle, do not leave the plate retention step until after collection.
Records to keep after collection
After the driver leaves, photograph the completed V5C/3 slip and keep the buyer's company name, address, and ATF licence reference. Once the Certificate of Destruction arrives — by post or email — keep it permanently.
West Northamptonshire Council (Northampton, Daventry, Towcester areas) and North Northamptonshire Council (Kettering, Wellingborough) both issue enforcement correspondence by post. Any notice relating to the vehicle after the collection date is clearable with the CoD and your DVLA notification record.
DVLA notification
Complete the GOV.UK online notification the same day as collection. You need the registration number and the buyer's details. The online route generates an immediate confirmation reference and is faster than the postal alternative. Until the DVLA record is updated, you remain the registered keeper — including responsibility for any road tax, SORN obligations, or Continuous Insurance Enforcement notices.
