Documents needed to scrap a car in Nottingham and the NG postcode

Scrapping a car in Nottingham requires the same core documents as anywhere in the UK — but the city's large student population and the NG postcode's mix of urban and former-coalfield communities mean certain paperwork situations come up more often here than in smaller markets.

The V5C logbook

The V5C is your vehicle registration certificate, issued by the DVLA. It names you as the registered keeper and is the primary document linking you to the vehicle. The yellow V5C/3 slip at the bottom is what the collection driver takes on handover — their legal record of the vehicle acquisition.

The V5C should be in your name. If you purchased the vehicle and the logbook still shows a previous keeper, you will need supporting documentation. A bank transfer record or written receipt from the seller, combined with your photo ID, is usually sufficient. Inform the buyer at the quote stage rather than on collection day.

Proof of identity

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 requires all licensed ATFs to verify the identity of the seller. A current driving licence or passport is the standard requirement. Students without a driving licence — particularly international students at the University of Nottingham or NTU — can use a passport instead. Any licensed buyer who skips this identity check is operating illegally.

Student vehicle situations

Nottingham's two universities generate a significant number of end-of-course vehicle disposals each summer. Common situations include:

No V5C: A vehicle bought cheaply at the start of the academic year from a private seller may not have had the V5C transferred into the student's name. In this case, the buyer needs both the original V5C (in the previous keeper's name, ideally with the transfer section completed) and proof that you have been using and insuring the vehicle. Explain the situation at the quote stage. SORN or expired vehicle: A car that was SOUNDed (declared off-road) or whose SORN has lapsed needs to be confirmed with the buyer. SORN-expired vehicles can still be collected — they just cannot be driven on the road, which the collection crew understands. Parked for months: A vehicle left in a permit zone or on a public road for an extended period may have accumulated parking fines or received a council notice. These do not affect the scrap collection — the vehicle can still be collected — but you remain responsible for any notices issued in your name before the DVLA transfer is completed.

Scrapping without a V5C

If you have lost the logbook, apply for a replacement V5C from the DVLA online for £25. Processing takes around five working days. If collection is needed sooner, let the buyer know and they will confirm what supporting documentation they require.

For the NG postcode's northern areas — Mansfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Hucknall — older vehicles with paper-format V5 documents (rather than the current computerised V5C) are still encountered. These are accepted but flag them at the booking stage.

Personalised number plates

If the vehicle carries a personalised registration, start the DVLA plate retention process before collection day. The online GOV.UK service is straightforward. Once a CoD is issued, the plate transfer window closes and recovery becomes difficult or impossible.

Records to keep after collection

After handover, photograph the completed V5C/3 slip before giving it to the driver, and retain the buyer's company details. Once the Certificate of Destruction arrives — by post or email from the ATF — keep it permanently.

Nottingham City Council issues parking charge notices and enforcement correspondence. If any arrives after your collection date, the CoD and your DVLA notification record provide the evidence to challenge or dismiss it.

DVLA notification

Complete the GOV.UK online notification the same day as collection. This is faster than the postal route, generates an immediate reference, and ensures you are removed as the registered keeper without waiting for the buyer's V5C/3 submission to be processed.
