What you need before collection day in Birmingham
Scrapping a car anywhere in the UK requires a short list of documents, and Birmingham is no different — but the practical reality in a large, diverse city means certain situations come up more often here than in smaller markets. Understanding them in advance saves delay on collection day.
The V5C logbook
The V5C is your vehicle registration certificate, issued by the DVLA and sometimes called the logbook. It is the primary document that links you as the registered keeper to the vehicle. When you scrap a car, the yellow V5C/3 slip at the bottom of the document is what the collection driver takes — it is their legal record of acquiring the vehicle.
If you have the full V5C, check that it is in your name and that the address shown is either your current address or one you can explain. Logbooks in a previous keeper's name create extra verification steps — not a barrier, but worth flagging at the quote stage rather than on the doorstep in Erdington or Sparkhill.
Proof of identity
As well as the V5C, you will need to provide proof of your identity. A driving licence or passport is standard. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 requires all licensed scrap metal dealers and ATFs to verify the identity of anyone selling a vehicle to them. This applies across the UK, not just in Birmingham, but it is non-negotiable — buyers who skip this check are operating illegally.
Scrapping without a V5C — what happens
Misplaced logbooks are common, and Birmingham's high vehicle turnover means no-V5C scenarios come up regularly. If you do not have the V5C, tell the buyer at the quote stage. A reputable ATF will request additional proof of ownership — typically a combination of ID, a recent utility bill at the vehicle's registered address, and potentially purchase documentation if you bought the car recently.
You can apply for a replacement V5C from the DVLA for £25 online via GOV.UK. This takes around five working days to arrive. If your collection is time-sensitive, inform the buyer before ordering so they can advise on their own process for no-V5C collections.
Birmingham has a higher-than-average proportion of imported European vehicles — particularly from Germany, Eastern Europe, and occasionally further afield — which sometimes arrive with foreign registration documents rather than a UK V5C. These need to be converted or handled specifically. If your vehicle has overseas paperwork, mention it at the quote stage. Buyers experienced with the B postcode have seen this before.
Personalised number plates
If your vehicle carries a personalised registration you want to keep, begin the DVLA plate retention process before collection day. The DVLA's online 'Retain a vehicle registration number' service is the appropriate route. Once you hand the vehicle over and a Certificate of Destruction is issued, recovering a personalised plate from a scrapped vehicle becomes significantly harder and is not always possible.
This is an easy step to overlook when you are focused on arranging collection, but it is worth completing as soon as you have a confirmed booking.
What to keep after collection
After the vehicle is collected, keep copies of the following: a photo of the completed V5C/3 slip, the collection driver's details (company name, licence number), and — once it arrives — the Certificate of Destruction. Retain these for at least two years.
Birmingham city council and West Midlands Police both issue parking charge notices by post. If a PCN arrives after your collection date for a vehicle you no longer own, the CoD and your DVLA notification record are the evidence that clears it. Do not discard them.
Completing the DVLA notification
After collection, notify the DVLA immediately using the GOV.UK online service. You will need the registration number and the buyer's details. The online service generates a reference and updates the keeper record faster than postal alternatives. Until this is done, you remain the registered keeper — which can create issues with road tax, SORN, and enforcement notices.
If you complete the online notification and separately complete the V5C/3 yellow slip, you have two paper trails. That is a good position to be in.
